Bounce Street

Various colors appearing on the street are not very appealing to us in our daily lives. However, this project offers people a compelling animation generated from colors on the street in real time processing.

The artists take a video of the changing faces of the street and its residents. The images of the street shot become the source of an animation projected onto the facade of a building, in which the images are transformed into dynamic colors and movements. The animation consists of many colored balls falling down. Every ball assumes a different color based on the color of the street and every color is expressed in different tonalities. The balls make a clear sound when they bounce against the ground, and the sound varies depending on the color of the ball. The sound that is produces is unique and can be heard only once with each particular ball, never again with another one.

The project is envisaged to be installed in a public space though it is not easy to achieve this in reality. Ideally, the animation is projected on the facade of a building by a big digital screen projector. At the same place, the artists are taking a video in order to capture a scene of the street. Therefore, the people who pass in front of the video camera will be able to enjoy participating in the changing colors of the street.

The artists developed some original software for this project, and it is being constantly modified and updated, as well as specially developed for each presentation. So far, the project has been presented in Japan, Austria and Spain. In 2003 it was presented at an orphans’ home in Kabul, Afghanistan.
