Needlepoint is artistic needlework employed to create hanging wall canvases, usually found in the homes of our grandparents. During the COVID-19 pandemic, work and going to work have been confined within the four walls of our homes, just as most of our other “outside” daily activities. During the pandemic, some people also experienced an earthquake that destroyed their "four walls".
Over the past year, Croatia has undoubtedly been hit by the irony of leaving and not leaving the comfort zone. When safety is in jeopardy, so is the welcome to such a space.
But what is a safe space nowadays?
Sanitized. Inspected. Isolated.
Making use of irony, the artist problematizes such a space and the entry into another space by means of interactive needlepoint canvases. She is interested in the ways the visitors will experience the activities introduced to prevent the spread of the virus, if they are differently interpreted visually.
The seemingly innocent grandma’s wall with needlepoint works is transformed into a station for recognizing body movement and safe distancing, while also allowing you to disinfect your hands using an ultrasonic sensor hidden in one of the embroideries. The artist thus explores a merging of the interior decoration of a home with stepping outside it – into a different space – and, as such, performing the activities introduced to prevent contagion and spread of the virus.
