The 30th edition of ISEA, an international conference that brings together artists, theorists, and professionals in the field of experimental and electronic media art, was held across multiple venues in Seoul from May 23 to 29, 2025.
Dr. Majcen Linn and Dr. Sunčica Ostoić delivered their talk, titled "Extreme Skincare: Two Case Studies in Biomedia Art", at Seoul National University. Their presentation explored the intersection of contemporary art, technology, and radical body politics through the lens of “queer cosmetics” and biomedia practices.
Focusing on the provocative works of artists Silvio Vujičić and Isabel Burr Raty, the presentation examined how skincare and cosmetic rituals can be transformed into critical artistic practices that challenge dominant norms of beauty, gender, and desire. By incorporating unconventional materials such as plant extracts and bodily fluids, these artists reframe skincare as a site of resistance, identity formation, and embodied critique.
Silvio Vujičić’s work featured in the presentation is produced by KONTEJNER.
Through this contribution, Majcen Linn and Ostoić emphasized the potential of biomedia art to question sanitized aesthetics and open up new conversations about the body, sensuality, and ecological intimacy. Their participation at ISEA highlights the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue at the intersection of art, science, and social change.
The visit to South Korea also represented an important step in the ongoing preparations for the next edition of Device_art festival, which will focus on contemporary South Korean art. The festival is scheduled to take place in autumn 2026 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb and is being organized in collaboration with the curatorial collective Vestige (Yunchul Kim, Jungyeon Park and Menger Chu).
