Marnix de Nijs is a Rotterdam based artist whose works explore the dynamic collision between bodies, machines and other media. The interface between the body and technology in his work reveals ways in which culture acts upon our senses. Technology must literally merge, become absorbed into the body so that it becomes a co-determiner of perception. And here perception refers not only to how external stimuli are interpreted by the five senses, but also the feelings that come from within the body itself, the information that is derived from one's own muscles and nerves (the technical term being proprioception). One of the characteristics of a technological culture is that change is constant. Everyone who wants to keep pace is continually required to adjust; this does not happen automatically and can, in time lead to cultural-pathological anomalies.

Marnix de Nijs has presented his works at several national and international media-festivals; he has worked with Edwin van der Heide, Time’s Up_org, Montevideo and V2_lab, ZKM and the Krisztina de Châtel Dance Company. Recent exhibitions include Sonarmatica 08 (Barcelona, 2008), Synthetic Times (Beijing, 2008), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, 2008), DEAF07 (Rotterdam, 2007). He has won several awards, among which are 2005 Witteveen & Bos Art and Technology Price, Honourable Mention Prix Ars Electronica, Linz, Honourable Mention Transmediale Award, Berlin.
