KONTEJNER (Zagreb)

EMAP residency - Karolina Żyniewicz

KONTEJNER is excited to announce the upcoming EMAP residency of artist Karolina Żyniewicz, taking place in August and September. Her project "Signs of the Times: Collecting Biological Traces and Memories" explores the memories and stories of the Covid-19 pandemic through the concept of 'storied matter' by Oppermann and Iovino, focusing on medical masks as symbols of this challenging time.
Żyniewicz's work integrates anthropology, art, and biology, using a transdisciplinary apporach to examine the material traces of the pandemic. She will use collected medical masks, and interviews that capture personal experiences, and analyze the masks through standard laboratory protocols. These findings will be translated into artistic expressions, including written texts, videos, photos, and biological samples, culminating in a performative exhibition.
Through this project, artist invites the public to engage with the poignant and multifaceted narratives of the pandemic, revealing the deeply personal and collective experiences embedded in everyday objects. The audience will witness how science and art converge to tell the stories of our time.

Karolina Żyniewicz (DE/PL)

Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and researcher (2009 graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, Department of Visual Arts, 2023 obtained PhD from Nature-Culture Transdisciplinary PhD Program at Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw). Working in a laboratory (mostly at the Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw) locates her works in the field of bio-art, although she tries to avoid using this term. She sees her liminal activity as situated knowledge production. She is mostly focused on life in its broad understanding (its biological and cultural meaning). Her projects have mostly conceptual, critical character. The main point of her PhD research interest is multilevel relations emerging during the realization of liminal projects. She tries to put her observations, as an artist/researcher (liminal being), in the context of Science and Technology Studies (STS) Actor-Network Theory by Bruno Latour and feminist humanities.
