Maxime Corbeil-Perron

Harnessing angular real-time editing from a custom-made light control system, the modulated lights of three analog film projectors are interrupted with speed and precision, using hand-built obturators, electronics, and software.

The projected images have gone through an array of transformations: beginning on Super 8 film, then transferred into digital image, converted back into analog video, digitized once more, and finally printed onto 16mm film. This layered circulation between photochemical, analog and digital formats became an essential part of the work, allowing the image to carry ‘paleontological’ traces of each transformation.

An audiovisual composition, the movement of light in space is tightly connected to sampled and synthetic sonic component. Landscapes of blazing colours, oscillating between abstraction and analog artifacts, underpinned by mechanical, syncopated rhythms.

A work that seeks to create allegories regarding the accelerating race toward technological progress, its impact on the environment, and our relationship with technology and its inevitable obsolescence.

Maja Milić: "INSCRIPTION, ENDURING, POTENTIAL"
(4-6 super8 projectors (loops), tapes, CDJ, pedals)

The performance centers on gesture as holder of subtle cultural memory and history, which could point to the body as an anthropological and sociological archive. Through physical habits, routines and automatisms rooted in the historical societal landscape (the source of tradition and folklore), the body possesses information and expresses knowledge of deep cultural implication.

The images are sourced from self-collected 8mm Yugoslavian home movies and deconstructed (by fragmented reshooting again on super8), trapping body movement or posture into short, unpredictable set of images, continuously re-arranged and re-choreographed in time. The body of the artist is very much present. The main guide is the sound. The material, filmic as well as sonic, is used as open structures which can be manipulated and reacted to in real-time.

The performance is a puzzle in a continuous research on (found footage as) experimental autoethnography, dwelling on her concept of the “Other within”. It includes an ongoing film, a book, an ongoing online textual archive "Dialogscapes", and radiophonic / sound experiments (some under published under Gypt records), often intermedial.

Maja Milić (HR/DE)

Maja Milić artist and researcher, experimental filmmaker, sound explorer and DJ. She was born in Slavonski Brod, but lives and works between Berlin and Jasenovac. Her practice can be characterized as experimental autoethnography, including extensive work with found footage, mainly the deconstruction and reconstruction of home movies, and trivial elements of reality. Apart from her film "OTHER" (2021-ongoing), such elements appear in her current work with sound improvisation, radiophonic experiments, expanded cinema performances, as well as in her conceptual book with the same title "OTHER" (published with Atlas Projectos, Lisbon, and We make it, Berlin), all cryptically intertwined and in all of which she believes to be practicing film, too. Intuition and unpredictability are crucial to her approach. Her filmic practice started 2010 in the artist-run analog film lab Klubvizija in Zagreb, currently being part of the lab Laborberlin, as well. She taught various workshops on found footage, expanded cinema, shooting and film processing. Under the moniker Geanina Gypt her "leftfield" and electroacoustic music is presented in a monthly radio show Gypt Sessions on the first free Berlin artist radio reboot.fm, in which the radio is used to express various conceptual sonic or filmic ideas. She started to self-release (mix)tapes under her own Gypt Records. The first music releases are coming up on a label from Berlin. She holds a MFA in artistic film from HFBK Hamburg and Dipl.ing.of graphic technologies from the Faculty of Graphic Arts, Zagreb. Currently she is teaching time-based media and performance in the Karlsruhe University of Art and Design (next to ZKM).
