Off Gamut is the title of a solo sound performance based on a dual exploration of the wind instrument: as a transformed electroacoustic instrument and as an extended external body of the human voice. Through digital processes such as pitch-shifting, time delay, and looping, as well as vocal improvisations, the linear expressions of flute and voice are transformed into a fragmented choir—a semi-imaginary ensemble of extended instruments, in which the flute becomes an extension of the human voice, and the voice a surrogate for the flute. Musical motifs are played, recorded, looped, and replayed, forming a fragmented polyphony of synthetic sound. The performance is conceived as a deconstruction of a fictional Renaissance madrigal in which breath and flute, through digital manipulation, become a layered structure of altered and transformed voices. The work is partly inspired by early polyphonic music, Renaissance madrigals, 20th-century minimalism, jazz, electronic, experimental and psychedelic music.
