Virtual Hole - Wind 1:1Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec (SI)

installation, 2011

The installation is a part of an on-going series of installations entitled Virtual Holes and Virtual Mirrors. The series investigates the relationship between weather phenomena and the architecture in an urban environment, where our dependence on, and thus awareness of, the external weather conditions is minimized.

Every time a raindrop falls on a rain sensor on the roof, or the sun shines on a light sensor on the roof, or the wind blows against a wind sensor on the roof, a corresponding raindrop, ray of sunlight and gust of wind is mechanically synthesized inside - the raindrop becomes a water droplet, the sunlight becomes light and the wind becomes wind.

The goal of the series is to create an installation where wind, rain and sunlight will together form a micro weather condition in the interior entirely corresponding to the outside weather, in real time.

By letting outside weather phenomenaindoors, or by mirroring them inside, Virtual Holes and Virtual Mirrors annul the protective function of architecture. They undo architecture in order to heighten our sensibility of the immediate surroundings, transforming ephemeral and evanescent phenomena outside into significant and poetic events inside.

By directly influencing the interior, everyday weather phenomena such as rain, wind and sun take on metaphorical connotations, while the built interior, now directly related to the external weather phenomena, becomes unpredictable. This newly established relationship between inside and outside blurs the border between the two, hence proposing a different, more sensitive, dynamics between the built inside and the non-material exterior forces surrounding it. The installations enable us to see daily transient weather phenomena as something significant, not only within the installation, but also outside.
