A workshop for secondary school students, accompanying the exhibition of a sculptural sound installation "Phonos" by Spanish artist Marco Vilanova.
The workshop consisted of a guided tour of the exhibition and a practical session focused on sound mapping and visualisation using a digital multimedia platform. Through the workshop, students were introduced to the basics of sound production, the concepts of soundscape and frequency, and the distinction between the audible and inaudible spectrum. While exploring the installation, they paid particular attention to infrasound, its sources, and the ways in which it manifests itself and affects space, the human body, and the environment. During the practical session, students worked in groups to create simple devices for visualising sound and then used them to map the space, documenting variations in sound representation across different frequencies through photographs and videos captured on mobile devices.
The aim of the workshop was to encourage students to reflect on the ways in which we perceive sound, through hearing, bodily sensation, and the observation of changes in our surroundings, and how sound influences our experience of space and ourselves. The workshop also sought to demonstrate how contemporary art can contribute to the understanding of scientific concepts through experimentation and direct experience. It was tailored to secondary school students (aged 14–19) and linked to curriculum subjects including Physics and Art, as well as the cross-curricular theme of information and communication technologies (ICT).
The workshop was organised by KONTEJNER in its exhibition space located in the former Vjesnik printing house in Zagreb, Croatia.
The workshop “Plant Intelligence and Mapping the Ecosystem” was part of the audience development programme "Spatial Mapping”.
The “Spatial Mapping” programme was co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia through the Public Call for Proposals for Programmes that Promote Audience Development in Culture in the Republic of Croatia.
