The workshop "Taste Mapping: From Ingredient to Advertisement" took place from 16 to 23 September 2026 at KONTEJNER, as part of the exhibition “Brown Cows Give Chocolate Milk” by Zagreb-based artist Antonio Kutleša.
Through the workshop, students explored the origins of food and the processes involved in its production, as well as key concepts of contemporary and bio-art, marketing and sustainable marketing. Through expert guidance and discussion about the exhibition, particular attention was given to how food is produced, and to the fact that the final food product cannot be separated from the processes that precede it. Its properties, perception and final form are the result of a series of decisions relating to raw materials, production processes and the ways in which the product is presented to consumers. As part of the practical activity, students made agar sweets, experimenting with colours, flavours, and aromas. Using a Multimedia digital mapping platform, they also mapped advertisements for food products in public spaces. In this way, they explored different dimensions of the experience of food, from sensory perception and cognitive processes to its social and cultural context.
The exhibition and workshop encouraged critical reflection on the extent to which we know the origins and production methods of the food we are consumeing, and how much our understanding of a particular product is based on its actual qualities and production process, as opposed to its packaging, advertising, and other forms of presentation. The workshop demonstrated how contemporary art can contribute to critical reflection on marketing strategies and their influence on food choices.
The workshop was designed for secondary school students and connected the subjects of Art and Chemistry with the cross-curricular topics of Health, Sustainable Development, and the Use of Information and Communication Technology.
The workshop was organised by KONTEJNER at its exhibition space at Odranska 1/1, Zagreb.
The “Taste Mapping: From Ingredient to Advertisement” workshop is part of the "Spatial Mapping" programme.
"Spatial Mapping" programme has a positive professional assessment from the Education and Teacher Training Agency as an interdisciplinary extracurricular educational programme.
The programme is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia as part of the Public Call for Proposals for Programmes that Promote Audience Development in Culture in the Republic of Croatia.
