A prominence arching from the sun. The weightless swaying of the deep sea. The coiling of the double helix in the microscopic world. The twisted rubber band of childhood play, suddenly springing loose. Mercurial gathers these distant events into a single gesture. Its movement is neither vibration nor repetition; before it touches form, it touches the viewer’s body. It sags, then suddenly surges; it flows in one direction, then bends abruptly into another, perturbing the familiar order of gravity and the rhythm of time.
The true source of this motion is not the motor but the torsional energy already stored within each strip. The drive merely provides the occasion; what determines the form is the relation between the energy condensed inside the material and its conditions of constraint – a potential field in which force has not yet emerged into visible form.

What occurs here is no visual metaphor – I call it instead a matterphor: a thinking carried out through matter itself. When topological energy stored within a system is released through a geometric transition at a critical threshold, an arch occurs – and the same event recurs across every scale, from the cosmic to the cellular to the remembered. Pre-twist holds the place of stored stress; the transition between torsion and bending holds the place of reconfiguration; the looping strip becomes the surging arch. And this twisting draws us into a wholly unpredictable, nonlinear world – where matter, at each critical instant, seems to choose a form no one can foresee.

What reaches the viewer is not visible movement but movement accompanied by bodily foreboding. The tension of the twisted strip is received as if it were one’s own muscle and tendon, blurring the boundary between machine and organism. From the collision of countless waving strips arise granular sounds and shards of reflected light – an artificial nature, assembled from machines yet behaving like a living field. Within this unsettling, time itself changes – no longer measured in seconds, but composed of tension, release, and reverberation, occurring each time as an event.

Yunchul Kim is an artist and electroacoustic music composer whose practice explores the fundamental dynamics of Transmatter and Mattereality. Transcending the realm of human experience, his work demonstrates the potential of imagination to create new realities. He envisions a material world that exists before language and culture defined it as a dimension where humans, non-humans, machines, and materials hold equal agency. In his works, matter exists not as an object but as the subject of events, a concept he defines as "Transmattering." Kim has received international awards, including the 2016 Collide International Award from CERN, Prix Ars Electronica, and VIDA 15.0. His works have been exhibited internationally, including the Korean Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale; 798CUBE, Beijing; Yokohama Triennale; CCCB, Spain; Science Gallery Melbourne; FACT Liverpool; Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt; ZKM, Karlsruhe; and Copenhagen Contemporary. He served as chief researcher of the transdisciplinary research group Mattereality at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS), participated in the art-research project Liquid Things at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and was a member of the international art and science project team Fluid Skies. He is the founder of Studio Locus Solus in Seoul.
