Jung Sungyoon | 정성윤 (KR)

Sungyoon Jung traces cyclical trajectories in which desire and belief expand and ultimately reach their end through mechanical devices and the forms they generate. By embodying, through (non-)functional mechanisms, the process by which force evolves into form, as well as the tension and order inherent in moments when increasing entropy hovers on the diagonal threshold of a critical point, the artist explores the conditions under which such cyclical systems are represented. His work does not simply focus on the visual effects produced by the movement of machines; rather, it requires a period of contemplative immersion for reflection. It reveals a spatiotemporal field in which all tangible and intangible things – including humans, who embody qualities and actions – continually interact with one another. The movements that alternately stimulate and relieve something thus become a natural process through which something new emerges. The changes in external form produced by the devices he creates do not remain merely passive materials; instead, they become active instruments capable of initiating an endlessly moving, fluid state. Through a freedom that traverses the paradoxical ironies between human and machine, the concept of the mind and the physical body, exterior and interior, and control and error, Jung enables us to perceive the world anew. His major exhibitions include Super Segment (2024, Whistle), The Taste of Grapes (2021, Perigee Gallery), and Eclipse (2014), presented as part of the SeMA Emerging Artists Support Program of the Seoul Museum of Art, as well as A Trivial Threat (2016) at the Kim Chong Yung Museum of Art. His residency participation includes the Goyang Studio residency at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2017), and the Nanji Art Studio residency at the Seoul Museum of Art (2012–2013).
